L-methylfolate (5-MTHF, Magnafolate®) is an active, naturally occurring form of folate. It’s an essential B vitamin that supports metabolism. Many people don’t get sufficient 5-MTHF because they have intestinal or liver dysfunction or because of their genetic deficiency which makes it difficult to convert folic acid into active 5-MTHF. A deficiency of folic acid has been linked to low-birth-weight infants and neural tube defects, which is reason that Centers for Disease Control recommends folate supplement for all women of childbearing age.
It is crucial for women of childbearing age to get enough folic acid – not just those women who are planning to become pregnant. Because half of pregnancies are unplanned, any woman who could become pregnant should get enough folic acid every day. Folic acid intake is especially important before conception and during early pregnancy, since its biggest need is during the first trimester.
Acting with vitamin B12, 5-MTHF functions as a methyl-group donor, thereby facilitating the conversion of the amino acid homocysteine to methionine. An elevated homocysteine level is a risk factor for a number of undesirable health conditions. Methyl-group donation is vital to many biochemical conversion processes, including the synthesis of serotonin, melatonin, and DNA.
Active folate is 5-MTHF, the naturally occurring, biologically active form of folate and based on pre-clinical that is nearly 7 times more bioavailable than ordinary folic acid. Unlike folic acid, Magnafolate® will not mask vitamin B12-deficiency.Many people have genetic MTHFR variations, while Magnafolate® can be absorbed directly.Magnafolate® can cross the blood-brain barrier, adjust the cognitive. Magnafolate® can lower elevated homocysteine levels.
Folic acid has been reported in numerous allergies, such as rashes, itching, swelling, dizziness, dyspnea, anorexia, nausea, bloating...Magnafolate® is actually non-toxic, without any toxic side effects reported. The toxicological data made by the national authority is that MTD is more than 15g/kg, and it is safe to take 900g per day according to the adult based on 60KG. However, as reported in the literature on folic acid, LD50 of rats was 0.5g/kg, that is, when rats were fed at a dose of 0.5g/kg, they were usually poisoned.
