Folate: how much do you need?

In the United States, most women should take a multivitamin containing 400 micrograms (MCG) of folate every day before pregnancy, or take the same amount of folate in a separate supplement.

During pregnancy, women need 600 micrograms, and if breastfeeding, 500 micrograms. In other countries, the recommendations may be slightly different.

Some women may need to take very high doses - up to 1000 micrograms per day - but this should always be done under the supervision of a doctor. These include women with a family history of neural tube defects, women with sickle cell disease or women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease or malabsorption.
Women who take certain drugs to treat cancer, autoimmune diseases or epilepsy may also need to take larger doses.

Although folate is easier to digest and absorb, you also need to obtain folate by eating green leafy vegetables, citrus juice, beans, nuts and seeds, bread and grains and other foods rich in folic acid.
