Many ladies who are planing to become pregnant may encounter a similar situation: after intaking folic acid, found delayed periods, prolonged or decreased periods and other irregular menstrual cycle problems. We are wondering then, does folic acid truly affect our period?
The Second Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University, Jiangsu Province Hospital, China did a survey on 219 pregnant women. Of 200 women who intook folic acid, 10% got delayed periods, 1.5% had periods earlier, and 1.5% had irregular menstrual cycle . However, after stopping on folic acid, almost all the women return to normal.
Through deep research, people found duration of folic acid supplementation does not affect periods, and it has no matter with overdose of folic acid. While compared to complex vitamin or mineral, intaking folic acid alone is more likely to cause irregular periods. The reason is folic acid will mask deficiency and absorption of other vitamin and mineral.
Overall, folic acid supplementation will cause 16% women prolonged or decreased menstrual cycle, especially prolonged. A similar conclusion was reached by a study on Danish pregnancy planners in 2015. Folic acid supplementation may be associated with delayed periods for some people, but is not the main reason of poly cystic fibrosis.
Kindly Reminder: In order to solve the problem of folic acid supplementation for people with MTHFR gene mutation, Jinkang Pharmaceutical Technology developed MEGNAFOLATE®, a patented bio-active form of folic acid which is purer, safer, and easier to absorb--L-Methylfolate. Compared to traditional folic acid, MEGNAFOLATE® structure is closer to extraction from natural plants.
