Low l methylfolate levels linked to dementia

It has long been known that pregnant women should take l methylfolate to help protect their babies from birth defects.

But now it seems that vitamins help reduce the risk of dementia, and low vitamin levels are also associated with premature death.

New studies in the United States and Israel have found that l methylfolate deficiency (also known as vitamin B9, its synthetic form is l methylfolate) is associated with a significantly increased risk of dementia and death from any cause - l methylfolate deficiency increases the risk of dementia by 1.68 times and the risk of death by 2.98 times.

Past studies have found that vitamins help form red blood cells and normal nerve function. They are essential for DNA formation and may help prevent heart disease and stroke.
The British Dietetic Association explained that l methylfolate supplements can reduce high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that stimulates blood vessels, which is associated with an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, although l methylfolate is considered an indicator of heart disease rather than a risk factor.

"l methylfolate is usually associated with pregnancy, but it is actually essential for health at all ages," said Dr. Carrie ruxton, a nutritionist at the health and food supplement information service.
"Its key work in the human body is to make our gene building blocks, DNA and RNA, and help cells divide and produce different proteins."
