How much folate do you need?

Women who want a baby need 400 micrograms of folate in the first trimester. This is twice the daily recommended dose (200mcg) that adults usually need. Although a healthy and balanced diet will provide folate, it is still worth taking supplements.

"Women planning to conceive are advised to take a supplement containing 400 micrograms of folate a day from before conception to the 12th week of pregnancy," said Nutritionist.

Sometimes, your doctor may recommend a higher dose. This is usually when there is reason to believe that your child may be at greater risk. "For short-term use in early pregnancy, if you have a personal or family history of pregnant children with neural tube defects, you may recommend using higher doses under medical supervision," Nutritionist explained.

Nutritionist said that women with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and taking antiepileptic drugs may also need to take more than the recommended dose.
