Potential side effects of folate

Folate supplements are generally safe and well tolerated as prescribed. A dose of more than 1000 micrograms may cause side effects, including abdominal colic, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, flatulence, taste disorders, irritability, nervousness, insomnia, nausea, and skin color changes.

Although rare, animal studies have shown that folate at very high doses may lead to behavioral changes and seizures.
